With reference to your Letter of the 4th August last, respecting the conveyance of Mr Blanshard, appointed Governor of Vancouver's Island, from Panama to
1Sir J. Pelly informed 18 Jan/50.
that Island in one of Her Majesty's Ships; I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to send you herewith, for the information of Earl Grey, a copy of a Letter from Rear Admiral Hornby, dated the 28th Octr, No 88, on the subject in question.

Rear Admiral P. Hornby to John Parker, Admiralty, 28 October 1849, explaining that he did not receive orders to send a ship to Panama until after Blanshard must have arrived, and that he now thought it too late "to take any further steps in the matter."
