Abstract
Despatch from London.
Newcastle writes to Douglas to approve of the appointment of Sangster to the
Office of Collector of Customsfor Vancouver Island. Newcastle then reports that he has forwarded to the Admiralty Douglas’s previous correspondence on the discovery of coal, and that he has informed the HBC of the necessity to plan for the
Moral and religious instruction of the Inhabitants.

Sir,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch of the 10th
of November last, and to convey to you my approval of the appointment of
Mr Sangster to the Office of Collector of Customs for Van Couvers
Island.

I have communicated Extracts from your Despatch relating to the
discovery of Coal, to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, and I
have called the attention of the Hudson's Bay Company to the necessity
of making effectual provision for the Moral and religious instruction of
the Inhabitants.
