Public Offices document.
Minutes (2), Other documents (2).
Mundy writes to Merivale, for Russell’s information, to report the Treasury's intentions to cover expenses, upon receipt of appropriate documentation, for the
charter the Otter as a Guardship for Vancouver Island.
A minute from Blackwood to Merivale suggests that the HBC should be asked to provide appropriate documentation for expenditures associated
with the use of the Otter.
The first of the two enclosures in the file is a letter from the Colonial Office to Colvile, which asks for the expenses incurred for the use of the Otter as a Guardship; the second is a draft letter from the Colonial Office to Mundy, which forwards the HBC's expenditure-details for the use of the Otter.
With reference to your Letter of the 9th ultimo, I am directed
by Lord Panmure to acquaint you, for the information of Lord John Russell, that the Lords Commissoners of the Treasury will be prepared on being furnished with a properly certified account of the expenditure
incurred by the Governor of Vancouvers Island in chartering the Ship
"Otter"as as a Guardship for the protection of the settlement, to pay the
amount to such person as may be duly authorised to receive it.
Mr Merivale
I should doubt the Hudson's Bay Company being able to send a certified
account of this expenditure: but the time consumed in a reference to
VanC. I. is so long that perhaps we had better ask the Co if they
have the necessary information. If they should not possess it then
write to the Governor.
