Douglas acknowledges receipt of Newcastle's despatch informing
him that
the Secretary of State for War has […] authorized the issue of a supply of Rifles for the use of the Volunteers of Vancouver Island, of a description superior to the Brunswick Rifles recently sent out; and that 500 stand of Rifles pattern 53, with a proper supply of ammunition have accordingly been presented to the Colony.

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of Your Despatch No 87 of
the 20th February last, acquainting me that the Secretary of State
for War has, on Your Grace's recommendation,authorized
