I am directed by the Postmaster General to transmit to you for the information of Mr Secretary Cardwell, the enclosed extract of a letter from Her Majesty's Consul and Packet Agent at San Francisco, reporting the wreck of the Steamer "Brother Jonathan", and the supposed loss of all the mails and despatches on board.

Duplicates, though without the enclosures, are sent to these distant Colonies. Though it is not clear by what Mail the despatches from this Office left London (we send twice a month on the 1 and 16th) I think we shall do well to send triplicates—with enclosures—of Mr Cardwell's despes between the 31 May and 16 June.
