Julyan writes Elliot to inform Newcastle of the cost of the assay stores and
small fire engine requested for British Columbia by the Colonial Office

may wish to cancel their order for coke. The minutes show that the Colonial Office staff concur.
Office of the Agents-General for Crown Colonies

London, W.C.
16 February 1861
I have the honor to report for the information of the
Duke of Newcastle that the estimated cost of the several
articles required for British Columbia—the requisition for
which was forwarded to this Office in your letter of the 7th
inst—is as follows, exclusive of freight and Insurance:
Vizt Stores for the Assay and Melting Office £172.18.6
Small Fire Engine 5.0.0
The
The time required to complete the orders will be about eight weeks.
With respect to the Coke, I have not been able to find

per ton Measurement, which is equal to about £5 per ton weight.
It is presumed therefore that it is not the wish of the
Colonial Government that it should be sent out under these circumstances.
The
The original requisition is herewith forwarded for
reference and I beg that you will have the goodness to return
it to this Office, if any of the Articles specified therein
are to be provided by the Agents General.
Mr Elliot
Instruct the Agent to procure & forward the articles with the exception
of the Coke, and ask the Treasury to pay the cost saying that the
Governor will be directed to repay the advance. I think the Govr
ought to be instructed as in my Minute on 913.
