George Alexander Hamilton served as Secretary of the
Treasury from
March to December 1852,
and again from
March 1858 to January 1859, when he was appointed permanent secretary. He became a member of the
Privy Council on
7 August 1869. Hamilton was born at Tyrellas, County Down, Ireland, on
29 August 1802. He attended Trinity College, Oxford, and earned BA degree in
1822. He ran for the seat in the
House of Commons for Dublin several times, holding it briefly in
1836. He died at Kingstown, Ireland, on
17 September
1871.
